Bank memiliki karakteristik:
- pemegang saham adalah para investor, baik dari dalam maupun luar negeri,
- dalam hal keputusan, para pemegang saham memilih pengurus yang digaji yang berasal dari masyarakat atau pengguna layanan bank,
- pemegang saham menerima keuntungan sebanding dengan sahamnya.
Sedangkan CU:
- pemiliknya adalah anggota yang juga turut terlibat dalam menjaga keberlangsungan CU,
- pengurus dipilih oleh anggota yang bertindak selaku pembuat kebijakan,
- keuntungan dibagikan kembali kepada anggota dalam bentuk surplus hasil usaha(SHU).
